Bliss.

Took a bus up to Mammoth for weekend boarding with The Firm. Highlights included a well-played volume discount negotiated by yours truly and my lovely coworker (name withheld to protect the beautiful) with Jon, key member of the LMFAO entourage. He even got called out of prep in the dressing rooms by security, and made sure we all got in to have a rockin time with LMFAO. Cheers Jon. Unlike any concert I’ve ever attended. You gotta ask if you want the details.

Friday morning
This morning I taught a bilingual class of LAUSD first graders about the importance of family, needs vs. wants, and how we work to satisfy the needs and wants of ourselves and our families. It was something terrifying to stand in front of 30 impressionable little people, but I ended up loving it.

There were a few of ‘those moments.’ I asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up, and a child yelled “luchador!” He wanted to be a wrestler. 10 other kids (one girl) pipped up that THEY wanted to be wrestlers too, and 30 seconds of air boxing ensued. I held up a picture of a handiman and asked the class to identify the occupation, and a kid yelled, ‘tooler!’, which the teacher announced was a ‘home word’. When it was time to say goodbye and they all ran up and gave me hugs, it nearly melted my heart.

Wednesday night

Shook hands with the Honorable Martin Indyk, former U.S. Ambassador to Israel. Listening to this man talk about his near brushes with peace between Israel and Palestine during the Clinton Administration, I learned more about the Middle East in one night than I’ve known, or tried to know, my entire life. It was inspiring and humbling to hear a man so dedicated to the possibility of change.

“It is better to try and to have failed, than never to try”

This, I do believe in.

Friday.

Boyz II Men live at Club Nokia, L.A. live, on Friday night. Classic 90′s feel-good choreo, suits and ties, shades, rhinestone wristwatches, long stemmed roses, nothing but oldies … sipping guava pomegranate Rockstar vodka, crooning and swaying with the finest couples of Lambda/Xi, escorted by my Kappa fav … discovering that we hold 8 tickets to seats that don’t exist …

Re-living the seventh grade never felt this good.

Saturday.

Made my singing debut during a Guitar Hero World Tour first attempt at dancenazi’s Brentwood housewarming. It was a festive Old Modern reunion at the tidy condo. Hello again, to the fun-loving bright-eyed reasons that I fell in love with NSU Modern freshman year. Excited to see all of you happy and thriving! Rested my eyes on something very shiny and heart-shaped. Congratulations to you both! Fresh paint and rewiring shoutouts to dancenazi and carseat man - yes, you would buy a How To book on rewiring sockets, and you did. Best wishes for the new pad. D, keep living the creative dream. Airbeen, good chat on work life. Rooms, i miss coming home to u man. Gotta find those post-its.

Celeb encounter #1: After meeting the sweet and talented Philip Wang (Wong Fu Productions) at AREA, the lovely ladies of Modern arrive at the door of Paris Latsis’ mansion tucked up in the Hollywood Hills, where a lucky few SF locals with friends in the right places are crashing for a long weekend in LA. Far East Movement, the Asia-Am hip hop birthday boys made a stop by after bday bashing at AREA. After a stargazer tour of the floor to ceiling glass property (yes, even the garage) and the triangular infinity pool, a pit stop by the well-stocked candy drawer in the kitchen, a botched attempt to bake brownies in the industrial oven, an amateur photo shoot and a round of pool, it was 5am before I raced the sun home to my blissful bed. Final score: Igewanani 1 Sun 0

Sunday.

Pinkberry with the wise neighbor friend. Good chat on the social forecast of now and the next two years. I look forward to the day where all of my friends are on the same page, and our work lives, free time and relationship statuses more closely align. It’ll never be perfect, but it’ll get better. For now, I’ll enjoy the eclectic diversity that they bring into my life: the college-goers and their sleep-late sleep-in up-for-anything enthusiasm, the sprouting young professionals living for the too-short weekend, the ‘married’ couples who are settling their snow globes and growing up so quickly it seems. It certainly keeps it interesting.

Monday.

My tell-it-like-it-is sister makes friendly wherever she goes. Over dinner at home, she fills me in on the family’s Vegas adventures. Highlights include trying on unimaginative black plastic UV glasses at Urban and asking my mom, “Do I look like Dad?” a question which so greatly amused the on-duty clerk that he recognized my sis when she came in to purchase them the following day, and told her he had told all his friends the story that night at the club.My tell-it-like-it-is sister makes friendly wherever she goes. Ever quick to react, the above is what happens when my sister feels wrongfully imposed upon, be it by person or … object. When asked about the situation, “Well I was walking by, and I looked, and he was like ‘hmph!’ so I was like ’hmmph back!’” Mom and sis were the victims of $32 dollar gelato at Caesars. Simply ludicrious. Upon arrival back home, sis was asked to Winter Formal in the form of a live music video involving a Scion backed up into our driveway, a jacket, two backup dancers/singers, a cameraman, and a large bouquet. For the delights of an evening with my sis, I would expect nothing less.
